Founded in 1940 though became Sega Enterprises in 1965, Sega never enjoyed world wide domination like Nintendo or Sony have enjoyed but found reasonable success in Europe with its 8-bit Master System console which was followed by the 16-bit Megadrive console. Meanwhile the Sega Game Gear, though technically superior to the Nintendo Gameboy never reached the same mass market appeal as the Nintendo console. Upgrades to the Megadrive in the shape of the Mega CD and 32X where also not popular, and subsequent console releases in the shape of the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast never hit the world wide number one spot. The failure of the Saturn and Dreamcast is a big disappointment due to both systems being home to some of the best shoot'em up games ever realeased, though many of these were released in Japan only.
