Amstrad was founded in 1968 by Allan Sugar. Amstrad went on to produce the classic Amstrad CPC range of computers in 1984 complete with striking green keys.
The CPC found success in Europe though never had the mass market appeal of the Sinclair Spectrum or Commodore 64.
In 1986 Amstrad purchased the intellectual rights to Sinclair's Spectrum computer so producing the Spectrum +2 with built in tape deck and the Spectrum +3 with built in disc drive.
